Vintage Hand-Carved Wooden Tulip Sculpture, c. 1980s
A beautifully sculptural vintage wooden tulip featuring a turned flower head and hand-carved leaves rising from an organic burl-wood base. The warm wood grain, elongated silhouette and natural form give the piece a distinctive studio-craft quality with a strong mid-century influence.
The underside bears a handwritten “Big John 1988” inscription. The meaning of the inscription and the maker are unknown, but the piece appears consistent with late-20th-century handcrafted decorative woodwork.
Especially beautiful in a warm, wood-rich mid-century interior, the sculpture would sit naturally among walnut or teak furnishings, collected ceramics, linen and other organic materials. A special one-of-a-kind object for a mantel, bookshelf, console or tabletop.
